Earaches are a common ailment that are usually caused by an infection. Typically this infection affects the middle and inner ear and can cause pain, and, in some cases, temporary loss of hearing. If you have an earache you should take steps to clear up any infection as an untreated ear infection can lead to a permanent loss of hearing.
Step 1
See a doctor. A doctor can determine if the earache is caused by a bacteria or virus. More than likely he will ask you to wait the ache out for a few days or to try some home remedies as most ear infections tend to clear up on their own. If you see a doctor early he can determine a course of action if the ache doesn't go away.
Step 2
Place some warm olive oil in the ear from an ear dropper. Warm up the olive oil on the stove or in the microwave until it is about body temperature, and then drop enough oil in the ear to just coat the skin. The oil may help the body facilitate its natural defense against ear infection and the warmth will soothe it.
Step 3
Warm up a heating pad and place it on the ear itself. This works much in the same way as the warm olive oil does but in a more general fashion. The warmth will soothe the ear and help the body fight off the infection
Step 4
Drink water. Being hydrated helps the body flush any bacteria that may be in your system. A well-hydrated body has a better chance of healing itself than one that lacks water.
Step 5
Once a few days have passed, see your doctor again if you are still feeling pain. If the ache is caused by a bacterial infection, the doctor may prescribe some antibiotics, especially if the patient is under 6 years old or if there have been two or more infections over the course of a month. Make sure you follow the instructions on the antibiotics and take the entire prescription.
Step 6
Surgery is the final option. If there is fluid in the ear that won't drain or if the antibiotics are not working, there may be no other option than to operate on the ear. Usually this consists of placing a drainage tube in the ear to help get rid of fluid and normalize the pressure.
Tips and Warnings
- While you are trying these remedies, feel free to take an over-the-counter pain medication for some relief. These painkillers will ease the pain temporarily and help you function. Stay propped up as much as you can. This will allow gravity to help with draining your ears.
- If you are prone to earaches or are currently experiencing one, take some care before you go swimming or bathing. Get some ear plugs so fluid doesn't get caught in the ear, making the pain worse.
