How Does Penis Enlargement Surgery Work?

Penis Biology

The penis is used to deposit sperm inside the body of a woman where it will have an opportunity to fertilize an egg, resulting in a pregnancy and child. It does this by increasing blood flow to the area so that the organ becomes erect, which makes it easier to enter the vagina.

Adding Length

The current process for having a penis lengthened is an outpatient surgery where an incision is made in the suspendatory ligament. This tissue is what holds the penis to the pubic bone. Since approximately half of the penis is actually located inside the body, the suspendatory ligament works to keep it in place. When this ligament is cut, it allows more of the penis to exit the body, adding length. To perform this procedure, a small incision is made just above the penis so that the scar can be covered by the pubic hair. Once this procedure is performed, an additional length of anywhere from ½-inch to 3-inches can be expected. This procedure is not recommended for everyone and is usually performed on men who have an erect penis which is under 3 inches long.

There are several factors to think about involved with this procedure. The suspendatory ligament is what keeps an erection facing upward and severing it can mean that the erection will no longer stand up. Also, the length, which is increased depends on the initial size of the penis and the health of the individual. If your penis is small to begin with or if you are overweight, you may not have as much growth as a larger penis or someone who is physically fit.

Adding Width

Increasing the width or girth of a penis is an altogether different process that can be done in conjunction with the lengthening process or on its own. There are two different ways that are usually used to increase width. One of these requires the use of liposuctioned fat. A doctor will take some of the fat in the patient's abdomen or thighs and then inject it under the skin that surrounds the penis. While this procedure will make you look bigger, it may not be long term. There have been reports of the fat disappearing within a year of having the procedure done as the body reabsorbs it. The other procedure requires the use of skin grafts. The doctor will take some extra skin and surgically place it below the skin of the penis with some excess fat. The skin grafts seem to have less of a failure rate, but as this is a relatively new procedure, there is still not enough long-term data to make any reliable judgment.
