In the book of Daniel in the Hebrew Bible, Daniel and his companions went on a strict eating plan because of a fear of eating unclean foods. The Daniel Fast is based on the eating plan Daniel followed. The Daniel Fast has a strict list of foods that are allowed. You should eat all these foods as close to their natural state as possible. Before going on any fast, you should discuss it with a health care professional.
Fruits
Fruits are allowed on the Daniel Fast. When possible, you should eat the fruits fresh and raw. You can also choose to drink all natural fruit juice as long as it doesn't have any added sugar. Dried, frozen and canned varieties are also permissible as long as they don't have any added sugar or preservatives.
Vegetables
You can eat any variety of vegetable on the Daniel Fast. Canned, dried, fresh, frozen and juiced are all permissible as long as no sugar, salt or artificial preservatives or chemicals are added to them.
Grains
Whole grains like plain oats, grits, barley and brown rice are allowed on the Daniel Fast. Nothing except water can be added to these. It is acceptable to cook these foods. None of the grains you choose can contain refined grains, white flour or yeast.
Other Foods
Beans, legumes, nuts and seeds are all allowed. These can all be used as protein sources. Some people eat seafood on the Daniel Fast; however, seafood wasn't part of Daniel's diet.
Warning
Just as important as what you eat is how you prepare it. Nothing can be fried or cooked in solid fat like lard. Foods can't be artificially seasoned or sweetened. Herbs can be used, as can pure salt. However, you must avoid honey and all sweeteners.
