The "Transfiguration Diet," published by Littlegreen Inc., highlights the dietary principles of John Christopher, Ph.D. Christopher's dietary recommendations for his transfiguration diet consist of whole plant foods and the elimination of foods thought to cause mucus. Christopher also incorporates supplementation recommendations to help with internal cleansing. The diet includes large amounts of whole foods including fruits and vegetables and can help meet USDA's dietary recommendations.

Identification

Christopher created a diet that eliminated foods he deemed mucus-forming. Overproduction of mucus, a clear substance the body produces for protection and lubrication, can lead to health complications, according to Ron Lagerquist, author of "The North American Diet." Foods that contribute to mucus formation include diary products, white flour, eggs and peanuts, according to Lagerquist. The "Transfiguration Diet" recommends avoiding all foods which may cause over-production of mucus, such as wheat flour, meat and milk.

Features

The Transfiguration Diet doesn't permit any animal products and instead focuses on plant foods. Christopher advises eliminating eggs, all dairy products and cooked nonorganic flours. The diet also avoids meat in all forms, except the occasional meal of white fish or young chicken. Avoid adding sugar and salt to your meals and all sugary foods, Christopher recommends.

Types

The Transfiguration Diet features fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds as the main food groups. Christopher suggests skipping breakfast and consuming the first meal of the day around noon. If hunger persists, he recommends eating whole grain cereal or fresh fruit. Lunch can consist of large salads, fresh juice, dried fruits and nuts, vegetables, and bean and grain dishes. Start the last meal of the day with vegetable broth, then consume salad and steamed vegetables, recommends Christopher.

Supplementation

The "Transfiguration Diet" book includes a list of supplements to include in your dietary regimen to assist the elimination of internal toxins. Christopher recommends ingesting 1 tsp. of cayenne pepper three times a day, as well as two or more kelp pellets to boost thyroid function. The supplementation plan also includes taking 1 tbsp. each of molasses and wheat germ oil three times a day. Supplementation also incorporates honey and apple cider vinegar mixed in warm water, which Christopher theorized might offer medicinal benefits.

Considerations

The "Transfiguration Diet" warns readers about the potential side effects of changing your diet, often referred to as detoxification. Detoxification symptoms may appear as toxins are eliminated from the body and may create feelings of tiredness and irritability or flu-like symptoms. Christopher refers to this process as a cleansing crisis, and he recommends rest and physical activity to help ease the discomfort.
