As an alternative to the maple syrup in the Master Cleanse or Lemonade Diet, you can use molasses. Diabetic recipes for the Master Cleanse include either agave syrup or molasses. Although these are considered safe alternatives by diet websites, you should consult your doctor before following the Master Cleanse fasting plan. Your doctor is not likely to recommend the diet since it is very low in calories.

Features

The Master Cleanse is a fasting diet that requires you to avoid solid foods for a minimum of four days. During this time period, you are told to drink a beverage consisting of 2 tbsp lemon juice, 2 tbsp maple syrup, 8 oz filtered water and 1/10 tsp cayenne pepper. Instead of using 2 tbsp of maple syrup, you may substitute 1 to 2 tbsp molasses. On the fasting plan, you must drink plenty of water as well.

Effects

The purported benefits of a cleansing diet include removal of toxins and weight loss. Although weight loss may occur, once your normal diet resumes, you are likely to regain the weight. Effects of a fasting diet include decreased energy, headache, irritability and stomach upset. You are not instructed to exercise on the Master Cleanse. If you experience any adverse effects, discontinue the diet and contact your doctor.

Types

Molasses is considered a safer alternative for diabetics since it has a low glycemic index. Molasses is a thick and dark colored syrup and is a byproduct of sugar cane and sugar beats. When you do use molasses in the cleansing diet, you should choose organic black-strap molasses.

Nutritional Data

The molasses is added to the Master Cleanse recipe to provide carbohydrates and calories to your diet. A single tablespoon of molasses contains 58 calories and 14.95 g of carbohydrates. Additional nutrients found in a tablespoon of molasses include 41 mg of calcium, 293 mg of potassium and 48 mg of magnesium.
