The Mediterranean Diet is thought to be one of the best diets. It consists of small portions of fish, healthy fats, fruit and vegetables, red wine, and the use of herbs, spices and olive oil. It has a relatively short history.

Greek History

After the end of World War II, a health study indicated the people of Crete had better heart health than the people of the U.S. despite the food rationing imposed by war.

Dr. Ancel Keys

Dr. Ancel Keys was one of several doctors who carried out a lengthy health study to determine if the diet of the Mediterranean countries could be attributed to the better health conditions of the Greek people.

Seven Countries Study

Keys' health study was called the "Seven Countries Study," and spanned the 1950s and 1960s. The process produced several studies, but they all concluded a similar result.

Impact on Health

The "Seven Countries Study" concluded the Mediterranean Diet had a direct impact on the health of the Mediterranean people.

Standards

Standards were set with the establishment of the Mediterranean Diet. The Mediterranean Diet is now referred to worldwide for establishing healthy eating patterns.
