A doorway pull up bar is a convenient way to sneak in some chest and arm exercises, even when you don't have time to hit the gym. It's important to remember that a doorway pull up bar places all of your weight on your door frame, so you need to choose a door frame carefully, and then watch carefully to make sure that no damage occurs. Most often, the door frame is the perfect place to mount a pull up bar, and because it easily removed, you can store it when you aren't using it.
Step 1
Find the idea place in your home to set up your pull up bar. Most pull up bars are made for door openings that are 24 to 32 inches across, so measure accordingly to make sure that the doorway you choose is large enough. The doorway must also have frame work on which to hang the pull up bar.
Step 2
Find the rubberized end of the pull up bar, or the straight edge. This is the edge that you will not perform the pull up on and needs to hang on the door frame. Center the bar on the doorway, and place the straight end on the top of the frame work on the door and pull the unit down to secure. The bar will be hanging from the top of the door frame, into the doorway, and will be secured by leverage of the straight edge against the top of the door frame.
Step 3
Test the sturdiness of the pull up bar by performing a few assisted pull ups with a stool or chair underneath you for safety in case the frame work isn't large enough to hold your weight. Once you've tested it a few times and feel safe, you can remove the chair.
Step 4
Inspect the area around the bar on the door frame and wall to make sure that you aren't cracking the walls or damaging the door frame with the pull up bar. If you see any signs of deterioration, discontinue use, as cracks in the door way can cause problems for the structural integrity of the entire wall.
