Milk of Magnesia or magnesium hydroxide is a medication used to treat constipation on a short-term basis. Milk of Magnesia has various preparations, including tablets and liquids that are taken by mouth. This medication acts as a laxative that reduces acid in the stomach and increases water in the intestines, which induces defecation. Milk of Magnesia is also used as an antacid to relieve indigestion. Side effects of this medication are possible, and a physician should be consulted prior to use.
Stomach Cramps
Stomach cramps are a possible side effect. As a laxative, Milk of Magnesia works by drawing retained bodily fluid from the tissues and combining it with the fecal contents. An increase in the water content of feces and their volume make the bowels distended. Bowel distention can stimulate the nerves in the colon, which induces peristalsis. The movement and evacuation of bowel contents helps relieve constipation. This osmotic process contributes to abdominal discomfort and stomach cramps. Milk of Magnesia should be taken as directed. This medication should not be taken for more than two weeks unless indicated otherwise by a doctor.
Hypermagnesemia
Hypermagnesemia is one of the potential side effects of Milk of Magnesia, as noted by the Office of Dietary Supplements. Frequent intake of large doses of antacids and laxatives that contain magnesium can elevate the magnesium levels in the blood. Pharmacological sources pose a higher risk for causing hypermagnesemia compared to dietary sources. Hypermagnesemia is an electrolyte imbalance that causes impaired breathing, decreased blood pressure and irregular heart rate. If left unmanaged, this condition can eventually lead to magnesium toxicity. The tolerable upper-limit intake of magnesium for adults is 350 mg per day.
Hypersensitivity Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions can potentially occur from taking Milk of Magnesia. Patients that might be allergic to magnesium hydroxide or the other components and ingredients of the medication may develop swelling of the lips, tongue, face and throat as well as breathing difficulties and hives. If hypersensitivity reactions occur, avoid Milk of Magnesia. Hypersensitivity reaction is a serious side effect; immediate medical attention might be needed to prevent unwanted complications.
