Pickleball is a sport that is similar to a mixture of both tennis and badminton but with a unique paddle and a unique ball with holes in it. Just like any sport, pickleball requires certain skills to be successful. These skills vary from motor skills to mental abilities that can help you defeat your opponent.
Hand-Eye Coordination
Hand-eye coordination is one of the most important skills you need to play pickleball. Your eyes must be able to track the ball at fast speeds, at which point you must be able to place yourself in the right position on the court to return the ball over the net. Hand-eye coordination is also needed to be able to place the racquet in the right position in your hand and away from your body to center the pickleball on the middle of the racquet so you can hit the ball to specific areas of your opponent's court.
Serving
The ability to serve in pickleball is also an essential skill. Serving requires the ability to hit the ball underhand with enough aim to land the ball between the nonvolley zone and the baseline of the service court. If the serve is done incorrectly, you risk having a fault called on you. Two faults and you lose possession of the serve. This skill takes the ability to aim the ball correctly to hit a specific target.
Ball Return
Being able to target a specific area of your opponent's side of the pickleball court is another important skill needed for this game. In pickleball the goal is to hit the ball in such a way that your opponent cannot hit the ball without it bouncing twice on their side or being hit out of bounds. This requires both agility to get to the ball and specific placement, such as keeping the ball low or hitting the ball to an area of the court that is the most difficult for your opponent to get to in time to successfully return it over the net.
Patience and Strategy
Patience and strategy in ball placement are two skills that are also needed for playing pickleball. In fact, organizations like the Saddlebrooke Pickleball Association suggest that ball placement and patience are even more important than your strength and power within the game. Patience is needed in order to think of strategy before moving to an area of the court, while ball placement strategy helps score points by hitting the ball in such a way that it can not easily be returned by your opponent.
