Keeping a set of free weights at home can benefit your exercise program because you can work out even if you cannot make it to the gym. Free weights are a common fitness accessory and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from kettle bells to bars with weight plates. You can purchase weights in a variety of places, from online retailers to garage sales. Where you buy your weights depends on your budget, and what you are looking for.
Retail Sporting Goods Stores
Brick and mortar stores and chains carry brand-new weights and fitness equipment and often have weights on display. These stores also offer assembly assistance for an additional fee, a sales staff that can assist you in making your decision, and warranty programs to protect your purchase. These stores also offer the option to return your purchase within a specific time frame if you change your mind. On the downside, these stores may have a limited stock and it may be difficult to find more specialized weights.
Sports Consignment Stores
These stores carry used weights and other fitness equipment. As with the retail stores, the consignment shops may have equipment on display and staff to help you make your decision. Expect the equipment to be cheaper than from a retailer and expect the staff to check the weights to make sure they are fully functional before putting them up for sale. For example, the staff should make sure that weight sets have all their plates, bars and attachments. However, consignment stores usually have a limited stock because their supply is based on what people bring into the store. Some stores may have a return policy while with others, all sales are final.
Online Retailers
You can shop online for specialty weights, such as larger kettle bells or interlocking weight systems that you may not be able to find in a retail store. Online retailers are best if you are an experienced buyer and know exactly what you want or need. Price varies as some retailers may offer specials and each retailer may charge different rates for shipping. The downside for online stores is that you have to wait for your purchase to arrive in the mail. You also do not have the option of trying the item before you buy it. If it is not what you were expecting, or if you change your mind, you have to mail it back---and possibly pay for shipping---to return it.
Garage Sales
Garage sales can be hit or miss for weights and other fitness equipment. The weights should be cheaper than from a retailer or consignment shop, and you do have the opportunity to try them out before you buy. However, you will not have the benefit of experienced staff members or a warranty program, and all sales are final. You will also encounter limited stock and the risk of damaged or incomplete weight sets.
