The Best Golf Ball for Slower Swing Speeds

The best golf balls for slower swing speeds are likely to be those with lower compressions. The compression of a golf ball is its effective density or, less formally, whether the ball is harder and more tightly wound or softer. A harder, tighter ball takes more energy to compress it, which requires a faster swing speed. So as Golf Digest explains, slow swings can't compress a regular or high compression golf ball enough to make it rise and stay in the air long.

Golf Balls

Most golf balls range from 80 to 100 in compression. But models for slower swingers, which can include many women or seniors, are made with compressions as low as 45. A high compression ball doesn't necessarily fly farther, since distance equals the speed at which the ball springs off the face of the club. And that will be maximized by matching your swing speed to the optimal compression golf ball.

Slow Swings

For those with slow swings, high compression balls are the wrong medicine. As golf pro Mark Pearson told SearchWarp.com, "They simply do not generate enough clubhead speed to compress the ball enough at impact to get the required response. The ball will feel very hard to hit. Golfers with slow swing speeds will find they get better overall playability from lower compression balls."

Variables

Choosing the right golf ball for a slower swinger is largely subjective, according to GolfSpyder.com. Even when you narrow it down to the right compression, there are still variables such as the ideal amount of spin around the greens for an individual player. Plus, with more than 100 models of balls, a player would be exhausted before testing all of them. So if you are a slow swinger--or a fast swinger--selecting a golf ball is more of an art than a science.

Top Choices

Playing or testing lower-compression balls from a number of the major brands such as Titleist, Nike, Callaway and Bridgeport may be the most logical way to find the best ball if you are a slower swinger. One benefit of being a slower swinger is that low-compression balls tend to be cheaper. Excellent low compression balls include: Callaway Noodle + Easy Distance, for swing speeds under 85 mph; Srixon Soft Feel, for swing speeds of 70 mph or higher; Callaway Big Bertha Diablo, an ultra-low compression ball; Top-Flite Gamer V2; Wilson D:25 Distance TaylorMade Burner LDP; Titleist DT Solo. The Golf Digest Hot List says, "Some like to argue that Titleist's best ball is its least expensive, and for some slower swingers, we would agree." Top low compression balls for slow swinging women include the Nike Karma, Precept Lady IQ and Srixon Soft Feel Lady.
