Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes chronic, widespread pain. The cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, and there is no known cure. Cymbalta (duloxetine) is a prescription drug classified as a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. It is used to treat depression, fibromyalgia, anxiety and diabetic nerve pain.

Theories/Speculation

Researchers believe the brains of people with fibromyalgia are more sensitive to the neurotransmitters that transmit pain signals. This causes them to perceive pain that has no apparent cause.

Function

Cymbalta prevents the nerve endings from reabsorbing extra serotonin and norepinephrine. This increases the levels of these neurotransmitters in the central nervous system.

Effects

Increased levels of serotonin and norepinephrine relieve depression and decrease the perception of pain.

Dosage

The dosage of Cymbalta in fibromyalgia is 60 mg once a day. Some doctors begin their patients at 30 mg once daily for a week before increasing the dose to 60 mg.

Benefits

Besides decreasing pain, Cymbalta can relieve the fatigue often associated with fibromyalgia.

Side Effects

Side effects of Cymbalta include dizziness, drowsiness, stomach upset, drowsiness and insomnia.
