While successful weight loss can seem like a mystery to many, the truth is that most great weight-loss secrets actually involve commonsense diet strategies. The advent of the fad diet and promises of quick and extreme weight loss have led many to believe that one of the best ways to lose weight is through obscure or little known methods. No better weight-loss secret exists than eating a healthy diet.

Eat Fat

Since you are usually trying to lose fat when trying to slim down, logic may say to stay away from eating it. However, fat can actually help you to burn fat. The key is to eat the healthy type of fats through the right kind of foods. While saturated and trans fats can cause weight gain, along with heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, healthy poly- and monounsaturated fats can help you to lose weight and improve your health. Incorporate olive oil, avocados, peanut butter, nuts, olives and salmon into your meals, which will help to boost your metabolism, improve your digestive system and ward off dangerous heart diseases and conditions.

Consume Carbohydrates

Fad and protein-based diets that promise quick weight loss have led to the fear of eating carbohydrates for many people. Like fat, you need carbohydrates to nourish your body and lose weight. A diet that contains carbs will help to keep you energized throughout the day, as well as keep your sugar and insulin levels balanced. Not all carbohydrates are created equal; eliminate carbs that contain added sugars or those that are made with white flour and instead eat whole-grain breads and cereals. Also, foods such as brown rice, lentils and fresh fruit are healthy carbohydrates that contain an abundance of vitamins and minerals.

Six Small Meals Per Day

Hunger is a common way that diets gets sabotaged. When you reduce your calories too much or attempt to go a long time between meals, your willpower and determination can falter. Eat every three hours through six smaller meals as opposed to the typical three larger meals. This method prevents you from getting ravaged and throwing your discipline out the window.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can be a diet-killer. When your body becomes dehydrated, your metabolism and digestive systems slow down, your appetite increases while your energy levels decrease and your coordination and performance during workouts severely suffers. Drink water regularly throughout the day and aim for a total of eight to 10 glasses every day.
