Yogurt provides three essential benefits to human health: Calcium and vitamin D to support bone health; lactobacillus acidophilus to support digestive health; and antioxidants to support the immune system. Several brands of yogurt, including Yoplait Yoplus, also contain probiotics that improve regularity and can relieve symptoms of digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. Probiotics are additional cultures such as bifodobacterium lactis. Yoplait Yoplus yogurt varieties include blueberry acai, peach, cherry, blackberry pomegranate, vanilla and strawberry.
Yogurt Health Benefits
Yogurt, made for centuries, is a common staple throughout the world, with its earliest recorded use being in the 11th century by nomadic tribes in Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Yogurt is an excellent source of protein, calcium, riboflavin, vitamins B6 and B12. Tartness in yogurt comes from bacteria cultures converting the lactose to lactic acid. The nutritional value of 3.5 oz. of full-fat yogurt includes 4.7 g of carbohydrates, 4.7 g of sugars, 3.3 g of fat, and 3.5 g of protein.
Nutrition Facts
One 113 g container of Yoplait Yoplus strawberry, peach, cherry, blueberry acai, vanilla or blackberry pomegranate yogurt has 110 calories, 1.5 g of fat, 5 mg of cholesterol, 65 mg of sodium, 190 mg of potassium, 22 g of carbohydrates, 3 g of dietary fiber, 15 g of sugars and 4 g of protein.
Vitamins and Minerals
One serving of Yoplait Yoplus yogurt provides 10 percent daily value of vitamin D, 15 percent calcium and 20 percent daily value of vitamin A and vitamin E. Antioxidant vitamins such as vitamins A and E keep cells healthy by preventing "oxidation," hence the word antioxidants. The process of oxidation occurs when one compound in the body attacks another, causing the loss of an electron, creating a free radical, according to John Kirschmann, author of the "Nutrition Almanac." When free radicals react with other molecules, cellular structures are altered, which is highly destructive to the body.
