What Is the Definition of Cholesterol?

Cholesterol refers to a fatty substance in your blood that can accumulate inside your vessels and lead to heart problems. According to the American Heart Association, your liver and cells make up 75 percent of your cholesterol in your body, while the remaining 25 percent is found in your food.

Types

According to the Food and Drug Administration, there are three types of cholesterol. LDL is bad cholesterol. HDL is good cholesterol. And triglycerides serve as the main energy source.

Misconceptions

According to the American Heart Association, anybody can have high cholesterol, including thin people. Margarine and butter are high in fat, and can contribute to your cholesterol level.

Levels

Your total cholesterol level should be less than 200 mg per deciliter. You should go to your doctor to have your cholesterol checked annually.

Prevention

There are specific ways to prevent yourself from reaching high cholesterol levels. According to the FDA, you should exercise at least 30 minutes daily, eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and see your doctor regularly.

Warning Signs

According to the FDA, there are no warning signs if your cholesterol levels are high. But chest pain can be the result of high cholesterol.
