The pull-up is a challenging, yet effective, exercise designed to build strength in your upper body. Pull-ups primarily work the muscles of your upper back, but you also involve your biceps and develop grip strength by pulling your own weight. If you do not have access to a gym or aren't equipped with a pull-up bar at home, you can still perform these strength-building exercises by using different structures available right in your own home.
Step 1
Drape a towel over a wooden beam. You may find the beam in your basement or garage, or you can grab onto the rafter itself. Ensure the beam can hold your weight before doing complete pull-ups.
Step 2
Reach up to grasp the ledge of a staircase in your home. Use an overhand grip and place your hands close together to fit on the step.
Step 3
Wedge some books and magazines under a regular door. Hang off the top of the door to do pull-ups. Use an overhand grip as wide as you can. The books prevent the hinges from bending from your weight.
Step 4
Attach 4-inch "C" clamps on a solid structure. This can include a wooden basement beam. Position the clamps a little wider than shoulder-width and use the "C" as a handle for pull-ups.
