Sears produces Roadmaster treadmills and provides an owner's manual with each unit. Owner's manuals include mandatory safety warnings as well as maintenance tips. Improper use of the treadmill or a lack of cleaning and lubrication can lead to problems. In most instances, minor problems can be avoided by cleaning the underside of the running belt and adjusting the alignment on a regular basis. A step-by-step procedure is used to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical problems.

Step 1

Unplug the treadmill power cord from the electrical outlet. Remove the bolts that secure the motor cover using an Allen wrench and set the cover aside. Insert the safety key into the treadmill console to open the internal electrical circuits for evaluation.

Step 2

Clip the voltage meter leads to the drive motor terminals at the circuit board near the motor. Set the meter at 12 volts. A positive meter reading indicates continuity in the internal circuitry. Remove the voltage meter clips.

Step 3

Inspect the drive belt for signs of damage or excessive wear. The belt should be pliable and uniform in appearance. Move the belt up and down between the pulleys and note the deflection up and down. Refer to the owner's manual for drive belt adjustment procedures.

Step 4

Turn the running belt adjustment bolts at the rear of the treadmill counterclockwise three rotations using an open-end wrench. Lift each edge of the running belt and inspect the underside of the belt and surface of the running deck. Hardened or discolored areas on the belt or deck indicate the need for replacement. Wear on the edges of the belt indicate improper alignment. Refer to the owner's manual for running belt alignment and adjustment procedures.

Step 5

Remove the safety key from the treadmill console. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet. Stand to one side of the treadmill and insert the safety key into the console.

Step 6

Turn the treadmill on. Refer to the operating instructions and select the slowest speed. Use the incline keys to raise and lower the running deck as described in the instructions. The incline feature should work smoothly. Typically, irregular function or improper noises indicate a lack of lubrication at the incline arm pivot bushings.

Step 7

Turn the treadmill off and remove the safety key. Readjust the running belt tension as described in the owner's manual. Reattach the motor cover and tighten the bolts clockwise.
