A freshly cut softball field in perfect playing condition never lasts long. With practices, games, running, sliding and bats and balls hitting the playing surface, it only takes a few minutes to ruin a softball field that was recently prepared. Maintaining fresh and even soil helps to ensure the safety of players as well as consistent, level playing surface.
Significance
A softball field caretaker or grounds crew needs to well maintain a softball field for consistency during the game and for injury prevention. The soil must be checked before and after a softball game. The quality of the soil around high-traffic areas, including bases, must be well-maintained and free of weeds. The soil must be checked to determine pH levels and fertility needs for the quality of the field for playing as well as to maintain a field that is visually pleasing.
Aerating And Topdressing
Aeration and topdressing should be completed multiple times throughout a softball years especially at the start and end of each season. As the soil becomes more compacted, the soil becomes hard and weak. Hard, week soil can make for a difficult playing surface. Aerating will loosen the soil and allow it to breathe. This task should be completed a minimum of two times per year. Adding topsoil to a field will help to keep the soil fresh, this can be completed multiple times throughout the year.
Infield
Maintenance on the infield should be completed immediately after a softball game. Maintenance should always be consistent. The infield should be watered and dragged. Dragging will help to keep the infield level and consistent. The edges of the infield should be swept to prevent a buildup of dirt and dust on the surrounding turf. A hand edger should be used to maintain the line separating the infield from the outfield. The infield should also be treated for weeds.
Pitching Mound And Batter's Box
The pitcher's mound and batter's box are treated in the same manner. These two sections take a beating during each softball game and should be repaired at the end of each game. Dry lose materials should be swept from the mound and box. The pitcher's mound may require packing clay to maintain a level surface. The clay should be moistened and shaped. It should then be covered with a tarp until the next game. The batter's box needs to be carefully checked for holes, repaired with clay and covered with a tarp until the next use.
Outfield
To maintain a healthy outfield, the turf should not be played on when wet. If possible, the turf should be covered during heavy rains. Players should practice throughout the turf in order to avoid excessive wear in just one area. Turf surfaces should only be mowed as needed. The blades should not be cut more than 1/3 of their size at a time. Blades on a lawn mower should be sharp. The lawnmower operator should alternate the patterns the turf is mowed in. This will help maintain the turf. Never mow when turf is wet.
