While most BMX riders focus on perfecting high-altitude maneuvers, flatland bikers opt to keep their tires closer to the ground. Flatland BMX riders display a keen sense of balance while performing wheelies and spins. Any smooth parking lot can be easily utilized as a flatland BMX course. Follow these trick tips to improve your flatland skills.
Bar Spin
The bar spin remains one of the most elementary flatland tricks. Locate an open parking lot that features a smooth terrain. Pedal your BMX forward until you reach a moderate amount of speed. Remove your feet from the pedals and place them onto the pegs of your rear wheel. Take your left hand off the handlebars and pull back on the right grip to quickly rotate your handlebars 180 degrees. Practice the bar spin until you can execute the trick at full speed.
Wheelie
The wheelie will take a bit more time because it involves balancing on the rear tire of the BMX. Pedal the BMX forward until you attain a comfortable amount of speed. Remove your feet from the pedals and position them on the rear pegs. Lift the handlebar grips to raise the front tire off the pavement. Keep your knees bent while balancing on the back tire of your BMX. Lower your front tire onto the pavement to complete the wheelie.
Whiplash
The whiplash refers to an intermediate flatland trick. Practice the whiplash at a slower speed to get comfortable with the necessary movements. Place your left foot on the back right peg of the BMX bike. Position your right foot on the front right peg. Lean forward to lift your rear tire off the pavement. Kick the BMX frame sideways with your left foot. "Ride BMX" magazine recommends shifting your left foot to the front left peg as the BMX frame rotates 180 degrees. Lift your right foot to allow the BMX frame to spin a 360-degree rotation. Lower your right foot onto the corresponding pedal to complete the whiplash.
Hang Five
The hang five involves balancing on the front tire of your BMX bike. Pedal forward until you reach a comfortable amount of speed. Position your right foot over the front right peg of the BMX bike. Lean forward to raise your back tire off the pavement. Push down on the handlebar grips to maintain a balanced riding stance. Extend your left foot towards to the ground for added balance. Lower your rear tire back onto the pavement when you begin to lose your balance.
