Phentermine Pills for Weight Loss

Phentermine is a prescription appetite suppressant that is used to help with weight loss. If you have a body mass index of 30 or more and don't have any health problems, you may be able to take phentermine. However, if you have health problems related to obesity, your doctor may prescribe phentermine if your BMI is 27 or more.

Specifications

Phentermine is available in an extended release formula that is taken once per day. In some cases, such as if you have trouble swallowing whole pills, your doctor may opt to prescribe a tablet form of phentermine that is taken up to three times per day. You should take your pill approximately 30 minutes before you eat a meal. If you are taking the extended release form of phentermine, consider taking it before breakfast so it doesn't interfere with your sleep at night.

Lifestyle Plan

Just taking phentermine won't help you to lose weight. You have to eat a balanced, healthy diet and exercise regularly. Your doctor should give you personalized guidelines for your caloric intake when he gives you the prescription for phentermine. In some cases, your doctor may set up an appointment with a dietitian for you. Your exercise program should consist of at least 30 minutes of exercise daily unless you have health conditions that necessitate activity restrictions. You can opt to exercise throughout the day for multiple short sessions that last at least 10 minutes per session, which may make it a little easier for you to reach the 30 minute minimum.

Side Effects

Common side effects of phentermine include vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and dry mouth. If these symptoms become severely troublesome or if they don't go away after you have been taking phentermine for a while, contact your doctor. Serious side effects of taking phentermine include heart palpitations, insomnia, dizziness, increased blood pressure, chest pains and swelling of your ankles or legs. These symptoms should be reported to your doctor immediately. If your doctor isn't available, contact your local emergency room or urgent care center.

Warning

Phentermine is considered addictive because it affects the central nervous system and has amphetamine-like qualities. Most people only take it for three to six weeks, but it is FDA approved for up to 12 weeks of use at a time. It is important to take phentermine for as short of a period as possible to reduce the risk of addiction. Additionally, when it is time for you to stop taking phentermine, your doctor should wean you off the product so that you don't experience withdrawal symptoms.
