Your liver filters gallons of blood daily, removing toxins from medication, alcohol, tainted foods and viruses. Overloading your body's filter with these substances can cause liver dysfunction and in some cases can be fatal. Periodically cleansing your liver will help it run at peak performance, keeping your body free from free radicals.
Step 1
Eat foods that promote healthy liver function. Foods such as apples, beets, grapes, and grapefruit help support your liver's toxin removal process. Ginger is good for increasing circulation and the liver's excretion of toxins.
Step 2
Drink plenty of water and get lots of fresh air. Adding lemon juice to an 8 oz. glass of water daily will help cleanse the liver and kidneys.
Step 3
Get the right vitamins for your liver. Vitamin E, zinc and selenium protect your liver from free radicals that can cause major damage. Garlic is a great source of selenium.
Step 4
Protein-rich foods such as eggs, nuts and whole grains are wonderful for protecting and detoxifying your liver. Make sure these foods are organic and have not been treated with pesticides or growth hormones. Green leafy vegetables are also an excellent choice.
Step 5
Chlorophyll, found in parsley, can aid in liver cleansing and is available at health food stores in drink and pill form. Milk thistle also reportedly has detoxification properties as does black cohosh, chamomile and dandelion.
