One of the reasons why it's hard to quit smoking is because nicotine is extremely physically addictive. Stopping smoking can cause withdrawal symptoms that make you crave cigarettes. One way of alleviating these withdrawal symptoms is the medication Zyban, which is a brand name for bupropion. It's an antidepressant medication that was discovered to also reduce the urge to smoke.
Step 1
Create a quitting plan with your physician. Because Zyban is a prescription drug, you will need to talk to your doctor first. Depending on how much you smoke and your overall size, your doctor may change the amount of your daily dose.
Step 2
Take Zyban twice a day, preferably at least eight hours apart. For many people it's easier to follow a regular schedule, such as taking one pill in the morning and one in the evening.
Step 3
Be aware of serious side effects. You should stop taking Zyban if you begin to have seizures, hallucinations, or if you experience confusion, as these are signs of a serious adverse reaction. You should also be on the lookout for signs of an allergic reaction to the medication, which include a fever, rash, hives, hoarseness or difficulty swallowing or breathing.
Step 4
Even if you have a lapse and have a cigarette, don't give up. Zyban is still working in your body and will not cross-react with the nicotine. Continue taking Zyban as directed and try to not smoke.
