When the body digests protein, it is broken down into amino acids to be absorbed by the muscles. Amino acids aid in tissue repair and muscle growth. Valine, isoleucine and leucine, also known as branched-chain amino acids, are the three essential amino acids needed for protein synthesis, according to Bodybuilding.com. Building muscle increases metabolism to help your body burn more calories per day. Losing weight requires creating a calorie deficit, or burning more calories that you consume daily. Combining amino acids with a healthy diet and regular exercise can help you shed pounds for a more svelte physique.

Step 1

Take 5g of branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs, prior to working out, suggests Bodybuilding.com. Visit your local health food store to find BCAAs in pill or liquid form.

Step 2

Have a source of thiamine, or vitamin B1, daily to help your body metabolize BCAAs.

Step 3

Engage in strength training three days per week to develop muscle and increase metabolism. Perform exercises that target each muscle group, like squats for legs, lat pulldowns for back, push-ups for chest, hammer curls for biceps, sit-ups for abs and tricep dips. Execute each exercise for four sets of 20 repetitions.

Step 4

Perform 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise four to five days per week to aid in fat loss. Jog outdoors, walk on the treadmill, ride a stationary bike or step on the stair climber. Take a group fitness class like boxing or step aerobics to add variety.

Step 5

Eat healthy to decrease your daily calorie intake. Consume foods in their natural form, such as vegetables, fruits, lean meats, whole grains, skinless poultry, low-fat dairy and healthy fats like olive oil, nuts and seeds, that keep you feeling fuller longer with fewer calories.

Tips and Warnings

  • Don't increase your dosage of amino acids in an attempt to lose more weight. More is not always better.
