Your health is one of the most important ways to protect your quality of life. There are ways to preserve your health so you can help prevent illness and disease as well as have plenty of energy for your work, school or personal interests. Adding a few healthy living strategies to your daily lifestyle can help optimize your health and allow you to continue enjoying the benefits of feeling good.

Step 1

Eat wholesome and nutritious foods. Fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy foods, lean chicken, fish and meat as well as whole grains all supply vitamins and minerals that you need to protect your health and stave off potentially serious illnesses and diseases, says Bernard Etherly in his book, "3 Easy Tips for Staying Healthy, Feeling Better and Looking Good." Filling your diet with as many nutritious foods as possible will ensure that your body has plenty of what it needs to function properly as well as prevent medical and physical complications.

Step 2

Restrict your intake of unhealthy foods. Soda, sweets, fast food and packaged foods are convenient and taste good, but they are empty of nutrition. These types of foods also increase how much saturated fat, trans fat, sugar and salt you eat, all of which are detrimental to your good health. Enjoy these foods as a treat on special occasions, but keep them out of your daily diet.

Step 3

Add physical activity to your daily routine. Getting active is one of the best ways to keep your body healthy and able to function properly, Rex Lee Reynolds says in his book, "Checklist for Staying Healthy." Adding at least 30 minutes of heart-pumping exercise every day will help encourage good health while also reducing your chances of life-altering illnesses like cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes. Exercise can also improve your mental health as well.

Step 4

Drink water. Water helps your blood flow properly and also supplies you with the energy you need to go about your daily tasks. Keep a reusable water bottle with you and fill it several times throughout the day to ensure that you drink plenty.

Tips and Warnings

  • Ask a friend or recruit your family to adopt healthy living strategies with you. The support you offer one another will help motivate you to keep living healthy. Home exercise equipment, such as a jump rope or free weights, can be just as beneficial as going to gym. Rent or borrow exercise videos from the library to keep your workout fresh and exciting.
  • If you have a family history of diseases like cancer and heart disease, see your doctor often to ensure that you are doing everything you can to reduce your risks.
