How to Increase Libido in Women

For many women, lack of libido is a common problem. These women still generally enjoy sexual intercourse; however they have a lack of interest in initiating sexual relations. A lack of libido can have many causes, including anemia, drug abuse, postpartum cool down, depression, anxiety, latent lesbianism or hormonal abnormalities. If you lack sexual desire, there are several treatment options available.

Step 1

See your doctor. A doctor can determine if your loss of sexual desire is physical or psychological and can direct you to the correct treatment. If the problem is mostly psychological, the doctor might refer you to a mental health professional for help.

Step 2

Take testosterone supplements. The main hormone that affects desire in both males and females is testosterone. This hormone is found in high levels in men, and testosterone directly affects the level of sexual desire a woman feels. A low level will negatively affect libido. Side effects to testosterone supplements can include increased hair growth, a deeper voice and an enlarged clitoris.

Step 3

Buy a sexual aid. In 2001, the Food and Drug Administration approved a device called a suction vibrator, which attaches directly to the clitoris to stimulate it. The cost is about $350. You also might be able to find cheaper, effective aids on the Internet.

Step 4

Take medication. Studies of the female response to male erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra, have been generally inconclusive. But these drugs might increase blood flow to the vagina, which could help boost sex drive.

Tips and Warnings

  • Look for factors in your life that might be contributing to this problem, then eliminate them if possible. This will go a long way toward helping improve your libido.
  • Increasing your libido is not an overnight process. If you get discouraged, you will not make progress.
