How to Treat Acid Reflux Disease

Your esophagus plays an important role in the digestion process. Located between the stomach and the back of your throat, its sphincter (or valve) blocks stomach acids from flowing back into your esophagus. When this valve becomes weak, acid reflux occurs. Rest assured, this condition often is easily treated, typically through simple lifestyle and dietary changes. However if left untreated, it can lead to a more serious health condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Step 1

Make dietary changes. Examine your diet and determine what foods cause episodes of acid reflux. While these foods vary for everyone, the most common culprits are fatty, fried and spicy foods. Eliminating certain beverages, such as those that are carbonated or caffeinated, also might help.

Step 2

Change your lifestyle. Begin by losing weight, even if you are only five or 10 pounds over the norm; these extra pounds place added pressure on your abdomen, forcing stomach acids upward. Eat your last meal three to four hours before lying down to give the stomach acids time to neutralize, and sleep with your head slightly elevated. The experts at Acid Reflux Cure recommend raising your head about 8 inches to prevent the contents of your stomach from shifting upward.

Step 3

Take antacids. Use over-the-counter antacids to help reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces. This, in turn, reduces the number of acid reflux episodes you might experience.

Step 4

Seek medical advice. Visit your doctor if the acid reflux doesn't subside within a reasonable time. Your doctor can prescribe medication that can help reduce and treat your acid reflux disease.

Step 5

Consider surgery. Ask your doctor about this treatment option if you have been taking medication for a long period, or if the medication is no longer effective. Performed as a laparoscopic procedure, this surgery strengthens the esophageal sphincter, preventing reflux from occurring.
