Running is still regarded as one of the best ways to lose weight, stay fit, and keep up a healthy heart; however, it can be torture on your feet. Running shoes are designed to cushion your feet, and provide comfort and shock absorption. Insoles that are inserted into your shoe can provide added benefit to your running experience.

Dr. Scholls

Dr. Scholls insoles are popular and cost effective. They provide many options for every kind of shoe. Their running insoles have a firm arch to support your foot and the ball of your foot, which is how you push off when running. Dr. Scholls will cost you around $10 a pair as of 2009, and can be expected to last approximately 1 to 2 months. According to Dr. Carla Emery-Culberson DPM, MPH PA, of Central Texas Podiatry, you should buy running shoes with removable insoles so you can modify or replace them with orthotics if needed.

Specialty Insoles

Going to a store geared towards runners may give you the best selection and quality. The insoles at these stores last longer than their drugstore counterparts, lasting a year or more. The two highest rated insoles sold at specialty stores are Sorbothane, which absorbs up to 97 percent of the shock your feet endure, and Superfeet, which is excellent for supporting your arches and minimizing damage caused to your knees and feet. According to Runner's World Magazine, you should always test your insoles before purchase by pressing the middle to make sure there is adequate arch support, even in more expensive brands.

Custom Made

Some runners may have deformities of the feet and ankles and would greatly benefit from custom made insoles. These insoles are made specifically for the patient's condition and are measured and ordered by a podiatrist. Depending on the situation, extra arch support may be added or higher shock absorption for people who walk and run with a heavy tread. Also, balancing of the foot may be required to prevent multiple fractures, according to New England Foot and Ankle, PC. Insoles have proven effective in prevention and treatment of foot-related problems caused by long term running and jogging.
