How to Repair a Treadmill Belt

When a treadmill belt gets frayed or damaged, you need to replace it with a new belt. A frayed belt can cause more serious damage to the motor, which is more expensive to replace or repair. Once a new belt is purchased, the treadmill can be disassembled and the new belt installed. This can be done without the help of a repair technician.

Step 1

Remove the screws on the side of the treadmill that connects the frame to the platform. These screws are on both sides of the treadmill, but both sides don't need to be removed. The old belt can be removed and the new one installed with only one side removed.

Step 2

Loosen the old treadmill belt and remove it from the rollers. The tension screws are located in the back of the treadmill. Using the Allen wrench, turn the screws counter-clockwise to release the tension. Remove the old treadmill belt from the rollers.

Step 3

Slip the new treadmill belt onto the rollers. If the tension is too tight to slip the belt onto the rollers, you can loosen the tension using the Allen wrench.

Step 4

Tighten the belt using the Allen wrench once the belt is placed on the rollers and situated in the center of the platform. Turn the screws 1/4 inch clockwise. Feel the tension on the belt to ensure it isn't too tight.

Step 5

Replace the screws that hold the frame and the platform. Using the screwdriver, replace the frame onto the platform. Ensure the frame is tightly connected.

Step 6

Test the new installation by walking on the treadmill at a slow pace. The belt should remain in the center of the platform. This indicates that the tension is properly set.
