How to Set a Pedometer for Jogging Instead of Walking

A pedometer is a device used to measure the amount of steps taken by the exerciser. The pedometer can also be used to calculate steps during jogging. Because the pedometer only detects walking steps, the jogger just needs to convert the displayed number into jogging steps. This can be used to determine how far the jogger has run during the workout.

Step 1

Press the "Mode" button and set the measurement units to "Distance." This setting records each step in your stride.

Step 2

Use the tape measure to calculate the length of your stride. Place the tape measure on the floor and take a step forward. The length of your stride is measured from heel to heel of both feet.

Step 3

Press the "Mode" button again on the pedometer. Use the "Set" button to select the length of your stride measured from Step 2.

Step 4

Test the pedometer by taking a step. For each step, the pedometer should display the number in the display console of the device.

Step 5

Attach the pedometer to your waist belt and take a jog. The pedometer will record each stride as a step. However, since a running step is longer, it's estimated that a jog step is the equivalent to two normal steps on the pedometer.

Step 6

Calculate how many steps were taken by the jogger by converting the steps shown on the pedometer. Since each step on the pedometer is one normal stride, calculate a jogging step by multiplying by two. This gives you the total number of steps. It's estimated that 2,000 jogging steps, or 4,000 normal steps, are equal to 1 mile.
