The Backlight and Fan Are Not Working on a Proform Elliptical 900 Series

The ProForm 900 series elliptical is a rear-drive, fold-away machine for residential use. The electronic back-lit console has a large fan to keep you cool during your workout. The display shows information about your workout including elapsed time, revolutions per minute and resistance level. If you have problems with the console or fan, the solution may be relatively simple.

The Console

The console is back lit so you can easily see it even in the dark. A small display area shows the important data about your workout. The circular fan is located at the top of the console. To turn the fan on low, press the "Fan" button. To turn the fan on high, press the "Fan" button again. Pressing it a third time turns the fan off. The console runs off batteries. If the pedals do not move for a few minutes, the fan will automatically turn off to conserve battery life.

Batteries

The ProForm elliptical 900 series user's manual states that most problems with the console are the result of low batteries. Start by replacing the batteries with fresh ones. You will need four 1.5 volt "D" batteries. ProForm suggests using alkaline batteries. Remove the battery cover on the bottom of the console. Insert the new batteries and replace the battery cover. Start pedaling to see if this solves the back light and fan issue.

Reed Switch

The ProForm website recommends you check the magnet and reed switch if the console is not functioning properly on your elliptical machine. You have to remove the side shields to check the reed mechanism. The gap between the reed switch and the magnet should be 1/8 inch. Using a screwdriver, you can loosen the reed switch and slide it closer or farther away from the magnet, as is necessary. The ProForm website cautions that this may take a few tries before you get the reed switch and magnet properly aligned.

Warnings

If your 900 series elliptical is still under warranty, you should not attempt any repairs yourself. This can void your warranty. Contact ProForm customer service for assistance. An authorized repair center will service your machine.
