The immune system is a network of cells, tissues and organs that works to protect the body from infections caused by microorganisms. Weak immune function is caused in part by nutritional deficiencies. Vitamins and minerals contribute to a healthy immune system. A 9-year-old child is old enough to swallow multivitamin supplements, but there are also natural ways to boost immune function in a child of this age through good dietary nutrition.
Consume Seeds and Nuts
Step 1
Grind seeds and nuts, such as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, linseeds and almonds, into a powder, using a coffee grinder or high-powered blender. The seeds contain essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals that will help boost the child's immune system.
Step 2
Sprinkle the powder over the child's food. It has a sweet nutty flavor, and the child will enjoy adding this to foods.
Step 3
Give the child 1 to 2 tsp. of the powder daily.
Consume Nutritional Oils
Step 1
Poke a hole in a capsule of evening primrose oil.
Step 2
Spread the oil over vegetables or other foods given to the child; it will boost immune function. It has little to no flavor and will not be noticed on the food.
Step 3
Attempt to have the child consume 1 to 2 tsp. of cod liver oil daily. This may be more difficult to offer the child because of its fishy flavor, but it is also supportive of immune function.
