Enlarged prostate gland, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is a common condition among aging men. If left untreated, BPH can block the flow of urine and lead to additional complications, such as urinary tract infections and kidney problems. In addition to medications and lifestyle changes, herbal supplements are a popular treatment option that may reduce BPH symptoms. Talk to your doctor about the right herbal treatment approach for your condition.

Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle extract, derived from the roots of the stinging nettle plant, is a recognized herbal remedy for BPH, according to MayoClinic.com. It's also a centuries-old treatment for pain, eczema, anemia, arthritis and anemia. A popular herb in Europe, stinging nettle is often combined with other herbs to reduce incomplete emptying of the bladder, urinary urgency and other common symptoms associated with BPH. The University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, reports that stinging nettle is comparable to a widely used prescription medication for slowing prostate gland cell growth, as evidenced in laboratory studies.

Pygeum

Pygeum, an herb taken from the African Plum tree, is a historical remedy for BPH. UMMC reports that pygeum is often used in dosages of 75mg to 200mg daily, and is proven to reduce nighttime urgency, or nocturia, and to improve the flow of urine among BPH sufferers. Talk to your doctor before using pygeum extract for BPH.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is used by millions of men and is often recommended as an alternative remedy for BPH, according to MedlinePlus. The herb is purported to prevent testosterone from converting to dihydrotestosterone, which is essential to prostate growth. In this way, saw palmetto works like prescription medications to decrease prostate growth and ease BPH symptoms. Talk to your health care provider about using saw palmetto for BPH.
