You may think an offensive line is the only protection a quarterback needs. With the risk of helmet-to-helmet tackles up and the chance of a quarterback sack with each play, quarterbacks need a list of accessories during a football game to stay protected, especially when the offensive line lets them down.
Helmet
The defensive goal is to take the quarterback down. In 2000, a study found that more than 60 percent of the 1,900 former NFL players surveyed suffered at least one concussion; 26 percent suffered three or more. A quarterback's key defense to protecting themselves from a concussion is a helmet. Riddell, the official helmet of the NFL, designed and developed a helmet shown to reduce concussions by 31 percent compared with traditional helmets. While a helmet doesn't stop helmet-to-helmet tackles, a properly fitted one may prevent serious injuries. Read the instructions that come with your helmet to ensure a proper fit.
Mouth Guard
The National Youth Sports Foundation for the Prevention of Injuries, Inc. reports dental injuries are the most common in youth contact sports. More than 30 percent of football players sustained oral-facial injuries, including loss or broken teeth, torn lip and/or gums. A mouth guard protects the teeth, gums, tongue, lips and jaw bone from sudden impacts, such as a tackle or fall. Visit your dentist to have a perfectly fitted mouth guard made for you.
Padding
In addition to protecting their head and teeth, quarterbacks need to protect other areas of their body as well. Shoulder, collar and thigh pads as well as hip/tailbone and knee pads are essential for the quarterback. The 2010 season saw many revered quarterbacks such as Michael Vick, Tom Brady and Brett Favre fall victim to broken ribs and shoulder injuries. "The good news is that this isn't a career ending injury," says Dr. Robert H. Brophy of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "People can recover and play. But, on average, it certainly does seem to affect how long these guys can compete at the highest level." To ensure proper protection and support, follow sizing guidelines.
Cleats
Quarterbacks have to work in all kinds of weather -- from dry dirt to slushy snow. Cleats provide the traction and stability needed to complete a play as well as protection from ankle sprains and injuries. You can choose from many types of cleats, from shoe style and cleat type to material. Choose the best cleats to meet your needs. To ensure a proper fit, size your feet before purchase.
