Liver problems include conditions that adversely affect your liver. You need a healthy liver for the proper digestion and absorption of nutrients and to properly eliminate toxins in your body. Symptoms of an unhealthy liver include pain and swelling in the abdomen, dark urine, pale stool, fatigue, nausea and appetite loss. You may be able to improve the function and health of your liver by consuming a nutrient-rich diet consisting of certain foods and drinks.

Foods Low In Salt

Foods low in salt may help maintain and build a healthy liver function. Salt can contribute to swelling and fluid accumulation in your liver. This can contribute to liver problems and worsen or aggravate liver damage. Consuming whole foods that are not processed, packaged or canned may help you improve the health of your liver. Good choices include a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein sources.

Foods Rich In Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are a good choice to improve liver health or reduce symptoms of liver damage and disease. Carbohydrates can help maintain adequate glucose levels in your body and ensure you have adequate energy and ability for proper food metabolism. Good sources of carbohydrates include fruits and vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, squash, broccoli, apples, pears and bananas. Other good sources include whole grains--such as whole-wheat bread and brown rice--and beans, lentils, nuts and seeds.

Water

Water is important for a healthy liver. Alcohol can be a contributor of liver problems, such as liver cancer. Alcohol can cause your liver to have to work harder and this can lead to damage. In addition, alcohol is dehydrating and may cause similar problems as high-salt foods to your liver. Hydrating, clear liquids, such as water, are good fluids to consume.
