If you want to improve your golf game, consider visiting a club fitter. While common golf course wisdom might say it's the player not the clubs that makes the biggest difference, many golf experts disagree. The right club may make all the difference in shooting a lower golf score.

Balance

The clubs you use affect your swing motion. If your clubs don't fit you properly, they will throw off your balance, according to "Real Golf." You also can have your clubs fitted to help you achieve certain goals, such as longer drives.

Compensations for Ill Fit

If you take golf lessons but use ill-fitting clubs, you will not achieve proper technique. That's because lessons are based on the theory that your clubs fit properly. That may leave you following an instructor's orders, but not getting the ball to go where you want it to. This leads you to make compensations that ultimately reduce your consistency, accuracy and power, according to "Real Golf."

Poor Fit Signs

There are signs that your clubs do not fit properly. If your shaft flex is too stiff, for example, you may experience thin hits or topping. If your clubs are too heavy or too long, you may end up with a reverse pivot. Basically, when your clubs don't fit right, you can have the best form in the world but not benefit from it.

Fit Factors

Your height and weight are not necessarily the factors used to determine the best fit. The distance you stand from the ball, the degree of bend that's most comfortable for you and the breadth of arc that gives you the best balance between control and distance are all factors, according to "Bobby Jones Golf Tips." Your strength, often measured by swing speed, is another key consideration. In addition to having your clubs fit, you need the right golf balls to find the optimal club and ball combination for your game, according to "Science and Golf III." You want to purchase clubs and balls from the same place for the best fit.
