A football training camp is typically a reference to off-season workouts that follow the postseason or occur before the start of the next season. A training camp is designed to work players so they develop better techniques and skills. The training equipment needed in a football camp depends largely on the particular positions and drills that are going to be run.
Tackling Sled
One of the most basic pieces of equipment is the tackling sled. It is a movable piece of equipment that players must push to develop better tackling technique. Sleds vary in type and can be a single or multiperson design with one to four positions for tackling.
Stand-Up Dummy
Another common piece of equipment at football training camps is the stand-up dummy. It differs from the sled in that it can be tackled to the ground. There are a variety of stand-up dummy types. Some automatically pop back up, which may speed up drills that require one person to follow the next. However, these types of dummies do not allow for as much movement as the nonsupported stand-up dummies.
Step-Over Bags
Step-over bags are often used during training camps to teach players movement-based skills. These pads can vary in length and width and are normally laid flat on the ground. The bags are often found in a trapezoidal, rectangular or semilunar shape. Step-over bags can be used to simulate opponents who have fallen to the ground or another player's attempt to grab the runner's feet.
Blocking Pads
Blocking pads are typically square or rectangular in shape and have two handles so players can hold them in place. Blocking pads can be used to simulate contact in a safer manner for drills that teach blocking and tackle-breaking technique. Running backs can do down the line as other players hold the pads and make contact with the runner.
