Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins that can occur inside or outside of the rectum. They are often caused by straining due to constipation. Treating and preventing hemorrhoids involves increasing fiber in the diet. Metamucil is an over-the-counter supplement that contains soluble fiber that can be incorporated into your diet to help prevent constipation and, thus, help heal and prevent hemorrhoids. Contact your physician if you have any questions or concerns prior to taking Metamucil.
Significance
When hemorrhoids occur due to constipation, it is important to treat the constipation in order to allow the hemorrhoids to heal. If the constipation persists, the hemorrhoids may worsen and continue to cause pain whenever you have a bowel movement. The fiber in Metamucil can help soften the stool, which will make bowel movements easier. When bowel movements occur easily and regularly, hemorrhoids will have a chance to heal.
Forms
There are several different forms of Metamucil that can be purchased over-the-counter in drugstores and grocery stores to help prevent constipation and treat hemorrhoids. Metamucil is available in capsules, powder, wafers and in single packets that can be taken with you and added to your water bottle. A Clear and Natural version of Metamucil is also available that can be added to any food or beverage for added fiber without the taste.
Dosage
In order to treat constipation, Metamucil may be taken up to three times per day. One tablespoon of Metamucil powder can be added to eight ounces of any beverage or water. If you choose the single dose packets, you can add one to the same volume of water three times daily as well. Two wafers may be eaten three times a day. It is important to only take one form of Metamucil unless your doctor recommends otherwise.
Warning
When taking Metamucil to relieve constipation and prevent or treat hemorrhoids, it is important to space the Metamucil dose two hours before or two hours after taking any prescription medications. If you have any questions regarding taking Metamucil or adding fiber to your diet, do not hesitate to contact your health care provider. If your hemorrhoids become more painful, bleeding increases or the symptoms do not improve, call your doctor right away.
