If you have had an amputation, your body will have to adjust its caloric needs to meet you new total body mass. However, that doesn't mean that you should drastically change the way that you eat or that you should stop eating the foods that you love. Adequate Calories
Calories are your body's fuel source. Eating enough of them will help you maintain a healthy and adequate body weight. Once you reach your desired weight and feel healthy, you may start reducing your caloric intake little by little so that you can maintain a healthy weight for the rest of your life.
Healthy Fats
Try to eat extra meals and snacks so that you can get enough calories and protein throughout the day. Eat more healthy fats, like olive oil or canola oil. You can use these to pan-fry meat, poultry, fish and eggs to give them a little more calories and flavor. If you don't like vegetables much, try adding cream cheese, olive oil or butter to your cooked vegetables to add flavor and fat and preserve all the vitamins and minerals.
Fruits and Vegetables
Your body will need of all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals it can get so that it can help itself heal quickly. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables each day. Try tasting new ones or experimenting on the way you prepare them. You can also put them into soups or casseroles. Additionally, eat lots of starchy vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and beans. As for fruits, avocados are rich in heart-healthy fats and have antioxidants and vitamins that can help you feel healthier overall.
Protein
Protein is the building block of tissue formation and healing. It also helps your body regain the strength it will need for a speedy recovery. Because you want to optimize your healing process, eat good sources of protein, such as milk, milk products, eggs, meat, poultry, fish, and beans. You may also try protein shakes, protein bars and protein powders. Cheese is another great source of protein.
