How to Slow Down Metabolism to Gain Weight

Whether you're looking to gain a weight class in wrestling, bulk up for a weight lifting challenge, or just want to add more weight to your thin frame, just eating more won't have much of an effect. To gain more weight, you need to slow your metabolism so that it isn't burning fat and get it to store it instead. You can stunt your metabolism by committing the reverse activities of someone who is trying to speed up the metabolism. After a few days on your new routine, your metabolism will slow and you'll be able to retain more weight.

Step 1

Eat foods that will stay in your system longer. Carbohydrates are burned very quickly as sugar in your body. Eat protein with your carbohydrates to make them stay in your system and become digested more slowly. Skip the vegetables because they can actually make your metabolism faster. Take a multivitamin so that you're still getting the nutrients that you need, even if you aren't eating well.

Step 2

Space your meals out so you have longer between meals. Eat three large meals that are at least 4 or 5 hours apart. Eating large meals less often will cause your body to store the fat and energy because it knows the next time you eat won't be for a while. Your metabolism slows to not burning fat as fast because you're spacing meals farther apart.

Step 3

Exercise less. Cardiovascular activity, paired with weight training amps up your metabolism to burn faster, and the Mayo Clinic notes that the more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism burns. Skip the strenuous workout, and switch to something that will have less impact, like walking.

Step 4

Eat a large meal or heavy snack before bed. When you go to bed on a full stomach, your metabolism senses that you are not active, and it doesn't need to burn the fat and energy you've consumes, so it stores it instead. Eating a large stack of pancakes, bowl of pasta or slice of pizza before bed with slow your metabolism through the night and cause you to gain weight.

Step 5

Cut your sleep back. Sleeping is generally the time that your body rests and recharges, and your metabolism has time to rev up for the day. The less sleep you get, the less chance your metabolism has to rest and the slower it will become, leading to you gaining more weight.

Step 6

Wait for time to take its toll on your metabolism. The Mayo Clinic advises that a metabolism can slow naturally, causing you to gain weight. You may notice a slow metabolism as you age, when your muscle mass decreases and has less need for burning energy.
