Purines are molecular components of nucleic acids which are naturally found in your body and certain foods such as meats and alcoholic beverages. When purines are disintegrated in your blood, a chemical called uric acid is formed. When you eat too many purines, uric acid is increased, causing a medical condition called gout, which is the buildup of uric acid crystals in your joints. By employing all the methods below, you can avoid accumulating too much purine in your body.
Step 1
Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine. Alcohol can alter the function of your kidneys, preventing them from eliminating uric acid formed from purines.
Step 2
Avoid crash or fad diets such as low carbohydrate diets or fasting. These diets can cause rapid weight loss, which can increase the production of uric acid formation the breakdown of purines.
Step 3
Limit your intake of red meat, certain fish and animal internal organs. Meats such as lamb, pork and beef are high in purine content, especially internal parts like brains, kidneys and liver. Also, limit fatty fishes such as herring, anchovies and mackerel, all of which are high in purines. If you want to consume meat, make sure to eat only about 3 to 5 oz. a day.
Step 4
Drink at least 2 to 3 liters of clean drinking water daily. Drinking enough water every day can help prevent purines from accumulating in your blood. Also avoid unhealthy sugary drinks such as soda and concentrated fruit drinks which can increase purine production.
