Soccer drills in passing are designed to improve your passing technique as well as your passing accuracy. Though many passing drills are designed for offensive players, these drills can also be performed by goalies and defenders to improve every aspect of their games. Soccer passing drills vary from short passing drills to downfield passing drills.
3 Vs. 1 Variation
This passing drill will improve your passing from short distances. Get four cones and set them up so they form a 3-by-3-yard square. In the center of the square, place another cone and a soccer ball on top of it. Have three attackers line up with one ball and one defender. Have the attacking players pass the ball back and forth and try to score by knocking the soccer ball off the center cone.
Dynamic Passing Drill
This drill is designed to improve your short-distance passing on the run. Set up a 5-by-10-yard box using a series of cones. The box should be three cones by three cones, each cone equidistant from another. Have one player stand in one section of the box while another player stands on the other side. On your coach's whistle, pass the ball across the way your partner. As soon as he kicks it back to you, have him run down the side of the box and pass it to him before he gets to the other side of the box. Repeat with you dribbling the ball to the bottom of the box before kicking it back to your static partner.
Four Square Passing Drill
This passing drill is designed to improve your passing off your first touch. Using four cones, form a 10-by-10-yard box. Have a player stand in front of each cone and have one more player stand in the center. Have the four players on the outside pass the ball around to each other while the player in the middle tries to steal it. If she successfully steals your pass, you are out of the game. The last player left standing wins the drill.
Wall Pass Drill
This drill is designed to improve your give-and-go passing skills. Section off half of a soccer field using four cones. From here, have four players stand on the inside of the cones with soccer balls. Have each grab a partner and have the partner stand on one edge of the field. On your coach's whistle, pass the ball to your partner and sprint to the side. As soon as he receives your pass, have your partner pass you the ball on the run. Repeat until fatigued.
