One reason it is so difficult to quit smoking is because of nicotine, an addictive chemical in tobacco. When you smoke on a regular basis, your brain becomes accustomed to having nicotine. As a result, quitting smoking causes withdrawal symptoms that make you crave nicotine intensely. Zyban---a brand name for the medication bupropion, which is also used as an antidepressant---is a medication that can be used to help reduce these cravings. Bupropion is thought to relax the part of the brain that causes these nicotine cravings.
Step 1
Talk to your doctor. Because Zyban can cause certain side effects, your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it. Your doctor may also adjust your dose depending on other factors, such as your weight and how much you smoke.
Step 2
Take Zyban two times per day, with at least eight hours in between doses. To avoid missing doses, try to take Zyban on a regular schedule, such as one pill at breakfast and another at dinner.
Step 3
Continue taking Zyban even if you have a lapse and smoke. Zyban won't cross-react with nicotine or anything else in your cigarettes and will still work in your body. Keep taking Zyban as you previously were and try not to smoke. If you keep having a problem, consider talking to your doctor about upping your dose or adding nicotine replacements to your program.
Step 4
Be aware of potential side effects. Patients taking Zyban may experience an allergic reaction, which can cause a rash, hoarseness, swelling and hives. More serious allergic reactions can cause difficulty breathing and swallowing, hoarseness, and tightness in the chest. Zyban in high doses can also cause seizures. Stop taking Zyban immediately if you have a seizure, hallucinations or experience confusion or have trouble thinking.
