Alli is the brand name of a medication known generically as orlistat. You may purchase Alli over the counter or get it as a prescription medicine from your physician. The medication works by blocking fat from entering the body's system; it binds quickly with consumed fat and forces it out of the body. This is a complete diet and weight loss plan that includes lowering fat and exercising. Orlistat may produce side effects.
Malaise
Among Alli's side effects is malaise, an overall sense of feeling ill. You may have trouble articulating exactly what you feel is wrong in your body. You may simply feel uncomfortable. If you experience malaise while taking Alli, consult your physician immediately.
Flu-Like Syndrome
A side effect of taking Alli are symptoms such as sore throat, nasal congestion, fever, cough, chills, sneezing and rhinitis. These symptoms may make you think you have the flu, but if you get them when taking Alli, speak with your doctor.
Diarrhea
Alli may produce some temporary side effects that occur commonly when starting new medications. For example, you may get a mild bout of diarrhea. Diarrhea occurs because of the increased fat molecules being forced out of your body. The fat is separated from parts of the bowel waste and expels from the rectum like oily water. This oily water may mix with normal bowel movements from time to time, causing a diarrhea effect. Diarrhea may cause cramps. This side effect is classified as nonserious, meaning it should go away without your doctor's aid, but speak with a doctor if diarrhea is severe or does not stop.
Flatulence and Incontinence
Flatus, or gas, occurs as a side effect of Alli. Flatulence occurs because of the increased gas produced in the bowels during the altered digestion produced by Alli. This same digestive action may cause another nonserious but uncomfortable side effect from Alli --- bowel incontinence. Because the drug works to expel excess fat from food in an oily form, you may have difficulty controlling your bowel movements completely.
