An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a bulging area in the aorta, a prominent blood vessel that sends blood to the body. A ruptured aneurysm can have a serious outcome, even life threatening, causing excessive internal bleeding. Sometimes symptoms are not apparent in individuals with a slow-growing aneurysm. However, when an aneurysm ruptures, causing pain in the abdomen and back and other signs of illness, immediate medical attention is needed, as surgery is necessary to survival.
Abdominal/Back Pain
Abdominal or back pain is a common symptom occurring with a host of conditions, such as strain from overuse or injury and illness. However, abdominal and back pain may also be a sign of an aortic aneurysm. According to the National Library of Medicine, pain in the abdomen or back that is severe, sudden, persistent or constant and radiates to the groin, buttocks or legs may signal that an aortic abdominal aneurysm has ruptured.
Nausea and Vomiting
Nausea and vomiting are often a sign of the flu but can also occur when an abdominal aortic aneurysm has ruptured. In addition, you may feel clammy and exhibit other pain-related symptoms.
Rapid Heart Rate
A normal adult heart rate is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. However, a rapid heart rate can occur from distress, physical exertion or anxiety. If anxiety or physical exertion are not the reason for a rapid heart rate, other serious conditions are likely the cause, as fluid overload from heart failure, kidney failure or other conditions can cause a racing pulse, according to the National Library of Medicine. When an abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptures, the heart may beat rapidly.
Shock
Shock, a life-threatening condition, can occur when an abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptures, causing low blood flow in the body, which may lead to damage to the organs. Signs of shock include a drop in blood pressure, anxiety, confusion or agitation, dizziness or fainting, uncontrollable sweating, shallow breathing or loss of consciousness. If shock occurs, call for help immediately help and keep the individual warm and comfortable.
