The Atkins diet is a low-carb eating plan that can help dieters lose weight effectively without being hungry. However, many of the popular beverages in the American diet are high in sugar and carbohydrates, such as soft drinks, juice, iced tea, punch, beer, smoothie, chocolate milk and even milk. Some people following the Atkins get bored of drinking plain water, but there are a lot of other low-carb options.

Alternatives to Plain Water

Many people get bored of drinking plain tap water, but you can try flavored seltzers and club soda for a change. Add more flavor with a little bit of lime or lemon juice or even a few leaves of mint. All of these options are calorie-free, sugar-free and carbohydrate-free and will help you stay hydrated while following the Atkins diet plan.

Black Coffee

If your need your morning coffee to start the day, you don't need to give it up. On the Atkins diet, you are allowed to drink up to two cups of regular coffee, as long as it doesn't lead to hypoglycemia or increased cravings. However, if you feel like you are addicted to caffeine, it may be a good idea to switch to decaffeinated coffee when starting the first phase of the Atkins diet. Skip the milk and sugar and use cream, sucralose or other sugar-free sweetener instead.

Herbal Tea

Herbal teas are rich in flavor but do not provide any calorie, sugar or carbohydrate. Experiment with different flavors until you find your favorite one. Some people also mix two or three different herbal teas together to prepare a big pot of their own herbal tea creation. When buying herbal teas, read the ingredient list carefully to ensure they do not contain barley or added fruit sugar.

Clear Broth

Drinking two cups of clear bouillon or broth a day is recommended, especially when getting started with the induction phase of the Atkins diet. Select a regular brand, not a low-sodium version, or even better, prepare it yourself if you have time. Broth is a good way to keep you hydrated while maintaining your electrolyte balance, so you can avoid the symptoms often experienced when starting a low-carb diet, also referred to as the Atkins flu.
