Acne is a skin condition characterized by clogged pores, blackheads and pimples. Acne is caused by sebaceous oil glands in the skin becoming clogged with dead skin particles, and simply washing the skin is often not enough to solve the acne problem. Fish oil is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help reduce redness and inflammation in the skin associated with acne. Fish oil may not work for some people; taking it does not guarantee acne will stop.
Step 1
Pour fish oil into a teaspoon. The recommended daily intake of fish oil when being consumed as a supplement is 1 to 2 tsps., or up to 3 g, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Step 2
Swallow the fish oil. It can be swallowed alone or poured on other foods. Do not heat the fish oil. The fat molecules in this polyunsaturated fatty acid are delicate and subject to damage and oxidization.
Step 3
Wait for signs that the fish oil is reducing inflammation. Watch for reduced redness and soreness of the acne on the skin. Fish oil may take from one to two months of consistent use to have a noticeable effect.
Tips and Warnings
- Purchase an oil that is packaged in a dark glass bottle and refrigerated. Fish oil is sensitive to light, heat and oxygen.
- Consult a nutritionist or physician before taking supplemental oils. Taking too much fish oil can result in a decreased ability to form blood clots and increased possibility of excessive bleeding from small injuries.
