Acne vulgaris is caused by excess oil, clogging of pores, bacteria and inflammation. Sebum oil is produced by the body to prevent dry skin. An excess of sebum, especially in adolescence due the hormone androgen, may clog pores. As a result the bacteria present in skin reacts with the clogged pores and can lead to inflammation. Inflammation determines what kind of acne is produced. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 40 million to 50 million Americans have acne and every year 85 percent of teenagers will experience it.
B-Complex Overview
Vitamin B-Complex helps maintain good skin and helps alleviate stress and anxiety, which can cause acne. Vitamin B-complex is constituted of thiamine or B-1, riboflavin or B-2, niacin or B-3, pantothenic acid or B-5, pyridoxine or B-6 and cyanocobalamin or B-12. Vitamin B-complex is water soluble and excess doses are normally flushed out through urine.
Thiamine Dosage
Thiamine is an antioxidant and protects the skin from free radical damage, which contributes to keeping skin looking young. It also works to improve blood circulation and helps prevent indigestion. A dose of 100 mg three times a day helps manage acne.
Riboflavin Dosage
Riboflavin helps strengthen skin, hair and nails. Riboflavin deficiency can lead to acne. Three doses of 100 mg every day helps combat acne. Rosacea keratitis, associated with acne inflammation may be reduced by taking vitamin B-2.
Niacinamide Dosage
Niacinamide promotes circulation and helps reduce inflamed blemishes. A deficiency of this protein can cause acne formation. Sufficient amounts of B-3 can be obtained through a normal diet. Niacin, another form of vitamin B-3, can be found in beef liver and kidney, salmon, tuna, beets, peanuts and other meats. It is also available in supplement form as prescription medicine if advised by a doctor. High doses can adversely affect the liver, so it is recommend that liver function be tested regularly when taking B-3.
Pantothenic Acid Dosage
Pantothenic acid can be found in meats, vegetables, cereal grains, legumes, milk and eggs. It helps in relieving stress, which is a significant cause of acne. The suggested dosage per day is 5 mg. Too much B-5 can cause diarrhea and it can adversely affect people with hemophilia, as it thins the blood.
Pyridoxal Phosphate Dosage
Vitamin B-6 fortifies the immune system and antibody production. Its deficiency can lead to acne. This vitamin is found in vegetables, whole-grain products, bananas, meats and nuts. Talk to your health care provider about pyridoxal phosphate and a B-complex supplement if you have acne. The amount of B-6 in B-complex supplements is sufficient for acne if your diet lacks foods that are rich in this nutrient.
