Adams Pro Irons Vs. Callaway Tour Irons

Irons play a critical role in your golf game as the go-to clubs to move your ball from the fairway to the green. Both Adams and Callaway are well-known names in the golfing world, producing clubs that are used by amateurs and professionals alike. As of 2011, two top iron lines from the companies are the Adams Idea Pro and Callaway X-22 Tour irons.

Adams Idea Pro Iron

Adams describes its Idea Pro irons as "classically shaped," featuring a narrow club sole and a low launch angle on the face that ranges from 20 degrees on the 3-iron to 46 degrees on the pitching wedge. These clubs are designed with skilled players in mind and feature a center of gravity high in the face. The Pro Black line of the clubs utilizes forged carbon steel for a strong but light clubhead that will power through the ball.

Callaway X-22 Tour Iron

Callaway Tour irons are slightly more open-faced than their Adams counterparts, ranging from 21 degrees for the 3-iron to 46 degrees for the pitching wedge. The clubs come standard with Project X Flighted steel shafts, but are customizable with graphite shafts when you order. They also have a narrow sole and shaft hosel that can be adjusted for custom specifications based on your shaft preferences. Callaway says the clubs are weighted heavier near the head perimeter to increase stability.

Adams Review

Golf journalist Jack Waddell of The Sand Trap says Adams Idea Pro irons are playable forged irons for skilled golfers. He notes that the tapered shafts of the Adams irons deliver on both feel and performance. The forged heads enable a solid hit on the ball as long as your stroke is consistent and clean. Waddell says during his testing of the clubs he was able to work the ball easily with draws, fades and other fine-touch techniques that skilled players look for in a club. The main drawback of these clubs is that if you do not have the skill to work with a narrow clubhead, it may be a challenge to strike the ball consistently.

Callaway Review

The Hacker's Paradise describes Callaway X-22 Tour irons as a "combination of playability and forgiveness." The forgiveness of the clubs is particularly emphasized in the review, as it is noted that you can get a straight-flying ball off your stroke, even if you are off center at the moment of impact. The trajectory off the clubs is lower than similar game-improvement irons, which means you are more likely to get distance on solid contact with the ball. Though less professional-oriented than the Adams Idea Pro irons, the Callaway X-22 Tour irons are generally praised as a solid choice for intermediate to advanced golfers.
