Racquetball is both a highly competitive sport played by professionals and a recreational game played by beginners. At the very least, racquetball is a demanding cardiovascular exercise that will help players get in top condition. To play the game well, you need hand-eye coordination, athleticism, speed and aggressiveness.

Novice

Novices are beginners who have played the game five times or less. They have little knowledge of the rules, hit forehand shots almost exclusively and understand little of the principles of the game, including strategy, court positioning and the angles at which the ball comes off the walls.

"C" and "D" Levels

Players at the "C" and "D" levels are usually beginners who have played the game for one year or less. They know how to make the basic forehand and backhand shots, but may not know how to hit a pinch shot or use the ceiling. Players at the "C" level understand the importance of staying near center court, but may have a hard time maintaining that position as the game progresses.

"A" and "B" Levels

Players at the "A" and "B" levels are avid athletes who play the game three or more times per week. In addition to playing frequently, they engage in exercises that will help them get in the best condition so they can perform better on the court. "A" and "B" players have advanced backhand shots and feel comfortable using them. They seek out top competition to improve.

Open and Professional Levels

The players at these levels are the elite players in the game. Thy know all the shots and can hit winners with both the forehand and the backhand. These players maintain proper court position throughout a match. They have an array of serves that can both overpower opponents and fool them. Professional players compete on the pro racquetball tour, while open players seek the top amateur championships.
