Osteoporosis is a condition that causes the loss of bone mass. It is most prevalent in those over 50. Citracal is an over the counter nutritional supplement that contains the main ingredient needed to fight osteoporosis, calcium. Citracal Plus Magnesium also includes two other active nutrients that are helpful to bone health--vitamin D and magnesium--along with some additional ingredients.
Calcium Citrate
Some calcium is used by the body in muscles, blood vessels and hormonal function, but 99 percent of the calcium in the body supports the structure of the teeth and bones. Adults should ingest at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day. Each tablet of Citracal Plus Magnesium contains 500 mgs of calcium citrate, which can be digested more easily in some than calcium carbonate.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium. Vitamin D is not available naturally in many foods (it can be found in the flesh of some fish). There are two types of vitamin D. Vitamin D2 is manufactured through yeast. Vitamin D3 is made from a chemical conversion of cholesterol and lanolin. Citracal plus Magnesium has 400 IU of Vitamin D, which falls within the recommended dose for adults.
Magnesium
Magnesium is important to maintaining tissues, cells and blood, but more than half the body's magnesium is in the bones to promote its health. Citracal Plus Magnesium contains two different types of magnesium. Magnesium Hydroxide is often used as an antacid and can aid in the digestion of the supplement. Magnesium Silicate is a fine powder that's used as a salt.
Additional Ingredients
Citracal Plus Magnesium also contains zinc oxide, a mineral involved in cellular metabolism; polyethylene glycol, a laxative; manganese gluconate, a mineral that can help inflammation; croscarmellose sodium, an additive used for drug dissolution; copper gluconate, a mineral that helps biochemical reactions in cells; hypromellose, which binds and coats the tablet and sodium borate, a white powder that is water-soluable. Titanium dioxide is added for color.
